“If You Weren’t Acting Like Such A…”

Imagine uttering the following to one of your clients or customers.

“If you weren’t acting like such a jackass, the project would have been completed on-time and on-budget weeks ago.”

Few, if any, business relationships could withstand the aftermath of those piercing words. Thankfully, we all do a pretty good job of taming the tongue in our work environments. It’s good for the brands we represent as well as our personal reputations.

Recently on the baseball field at my neighborhood elementary school, I heard the following words shouted loud and clear.

“If you weren’t acting like such a jackass, you wouldn’t have gotten hurt in the first place. Now suck it up and get out there.”

A father delivered that message to his nine-year-old son after the child accidentally hit his own leg while wildly swinging his bat. The tears from his physical pain ceased, but the boy’s wounded heart may never heal.

I have to confess that I puncture my children’s hearts with a few course words all too often (forgive me Jacob and Ben). Too bad I don’t keep my cool in stressful situations with my beloved sons like I regularly do with my clients.

Maybe we can all learn from the dad at the ball field instead of simply shaking our heads and being appalled by his actions – like I was at first.

As difficult as it may be at times, we make the world a far better place now and for ensuing generations when we keep our words and emotions in check with our children – just like we do in the workplace.

Your clients and customers deserve your best – but even more so your children.

Serve them both well.
